Smart Cities & Communities

Half of world population lives in cities and the UN estimates that this number will increase to two out of three people within the next 30 years. The global trend of increasing urbanisation causes societal challenges like pollution, traffic density and energy supply. Digital technologies are important to solve these challenges and therefore we strive to enrich our understanding of how the development and deployment of new technologies in urban and rural settings and communities can contribute to creating sustainable societies.

As our name implies, smart cities and communities is the focal point for our research and this is also reflected in our project portfolio. SynchroniCity is focusing on opening a global market, where cities and businesses develop IoT- and AI-enabled services through pilots to improve the lives of citizens. SCORE (Smart Cities Open data Re-use) aims to increase efficiency and quality of public services in cities based on smart and open data-driven solutions and OrganiCity is a service for experimentation, which explores how citizens, businesses and city authorities can work together to create digital solutions to urban challenges.
